Cashelmara by Susan Howatch

Book: Cashelmara (Ebook)

Author: Susan Howatch

Release date (if applicable): Published

Synopsis: Set in late 19 century famine struck/class warring Ireland, Cashelmera (the name of the estate) tells the story of three generations of the extremely wealthy yet deeply dysfunctional de Salis family. When the son's gambling problem leads to the financial ruin of the de Salis family, it unravels like a ball of yarn showing the dysfunction went deeper than anyone knew.

My rating: 4.5 Stars

My opinion: This was just good writing. I couldn't help as though I was looking at the destruction of this family through a window and given the view to the destruction of a family. Broken down into 6 different books with each being written for a different POV, the reader was given insight into everyone's thoughts.

On a side note, I had a really tough time with this book for about the first 150 pages. I felt the first part of book kind of dragged on to me. When the story of Sarah and Patrick started, the book absolutely took off. So, hang in there!

Would I recommend? : Oh yeah! There was just something voyeuristic about reading this novel. It had everything in it...murder, destruction, dysfunction.
